| This is the largest man made hole that I have ever seen. It is the Martha Mine in Waihi, in the Coromandel district of New Zealand, which extracts gold and silver . The Waihi miners' strike of 1912 was one of the most significant in the history of New Zealand's labour movement. A strike was called after workers thought that the mining compnay was attempting to split the union after a brakaway union was set up. 10% of New Zealands police were sent and one unionist was killed. Environmental concerns remain. As well as being an eysore and responsible for subsidence, the extraction of silver and gold requires cyanide. | |
